The annual roadworthiness check every UK car needs.
An MOT (short for Ministry of Transport test) is the annual safety, roadworthiness and exhaust emissions inspection legally required for almost every vehicle on UK roads over three years old. It's governed by official UK MOT regulations, and can only be carried out by approved Vehicle Testing Stations (the little blue triangle sign you've probably seen outside thousands of garages).
The test itself takes around 45 minutes and runs through over 100 checks covering everything from headlight alignment to brake balance, tyre tread, suspension play, fuel leaks and exhaust emissions. Nothing is dismantled. It's a visual and operational inspection, not a service.
Pass and you get a fresh MOT certificate, valid for 12 months, logged on the central MOT database within minutes. Fail and you'll get a VT30 listing exactly what needs to be put right. Either way, you'll know exactly where your car stands.
Over 100 checks. Roughly 45 minutes. One certificate.
The MOT is a legal road-worthiness test, not a service. Here's a breakdown of the eight main inspection areas the tester works through while your car is on the ramp.
Lights & signals
Headlights, indicators, brake lights, hazard lights, fog lights, registration plate lamps and reflectors, all checked for alignment, condition, colour and operation.
Brakes & tyres
Brake performance on the rollers, pad and disc wear, handbrake efficiency, brake fluid level and warning lamp, tyre tread depth (1.6mm legal minimum across the central three-quarters) and overall tyre condition.
Bodywork & structure
Corrosion in load-bearing areas, sharp edges that could injure pedestrians, mirrors, doors, the bonnet catch, fuel cap seal and structural integrity of the chassis and subframes.
Emissions & exhaust
Exhaust system condition, leaks, mountings and emissions output tested against the official emissions limits for your vehicle's fuel type and age, including the diesel particulate filter (DPF) where fitted.
Visibility
Windscreen chips and cracks (damage over 10mm directly in the driver's line of sight (a 290mm zone in front of the steering wheel) is a fail, elsewhere in the swept area the limit is 40mm), wipers, washers, sun visors and the rear-view mirror. Anything that obstructs the driver's view of the road.
Steering & suspension
Steering column play, power steering operation, suspension components, shock absorbers, springs, wheel bearings and any sign of fluid leaks from the steering or suspension.
Fuel & exhaust system
Fuel cap seal, fuel system leaks, exhaust mountings and silencer condition, including a noise check on modified or sports exhausts.
Seatbelts & airbags
Every fitted seatbelt is checked for fraying, locking and anchor security. Airbag warning lights and other safety-critical dashboard lights also count.
The bits the garage rarely explains.
Max fee is £54.85
That's the official cap for a Class 4 car or light van MOT. Most garages listed on BookMyGarage come in well under the cap because they compete on price.
Test up to a month early
Get tested within 30 days of your expiry and you keep your original renewal date. Don't wait. Driving without a valid MOT is a £1,000 fine and almost certainly invalidates your insurance.
Fail? You'll get a list
Failures come with a VT30 form listing exactly what needs fixing, categorised as Minor, Major or Dangerous. You can come back and compare repair quotes on BookMyGarage before saying yes to anything.
Officially approved centres only
Every test centre listed on BookMyGarage is registered to carry out official MOT tests. Your result is logged on the official MOT database within minutes, so no paper certificate is required to prove it.
Lost your certificate? Doesn't matter
MOT results are recorded digitally. Anyone can check a vehicle's full MOT history free on GOV.UK using just the registration, including mileage at each test and the reason for any failure.
Class 4 covers most cars
Cars (up to 8 passenger seats), motorcaravans and light goods vehicles up to 3,000kg fall under Class 4. Larger vans (3,000–3,500kg) are Class 7: same test, slightly higher fee cap of £58.60.
Roughly 1 in 4 MOTs fails first time.
According to DVSA MOT testing data, around 1 in 4 Class 4 MOTs fails first time, and the overwhelming majority of those are for avoidable, often cheap-to-fix issues. Spotting them before you book can save you a retest fee and a wasted morning.
Here are the five most common categories of failure and what's usually behind them.
| Reason for failure | Share of fails |
|---|---|
Lighting & signalling Often a blown bulb or a misaligned headlight, both cheap fixes if caught before the test. | ~30% |
Suspension defects Worn dampers, broken springs or knackered bushes. Listen for knocks over bumps. | ~20% |
Brakes Uneven braking on the rollers, worn pads or a sticking caliper. | ~17% |
Tyres Below 1.6mm tread, sidewall damage or mismatched sizes on the same axle. | ~10% |
Visibility (wipers, washers, view) A torn wiper blade or an empty washer bottle is enough to fail. Top up before you go. | ~8% |
Ten minutes the night before could save you a retest.
Most MOT failures are for things you can check yourself in the driveway. Run through this list before you drop the car off.
- 1Top up the screen wash and check both wiper blades for tears or streaking
- 2Walk around the car with the lights on and check every bulb: main beam, dip, brake, indicators, fogs, plate lights
- 3Check tyre pressures and tread depth (a 20p coin in the main grooves; if the outer band shows, you're below 3mm)
- 4Make sure the horn works and the seatbelts retract cleanly
- 5Check the registration plates aren't cracked, faded or using a non-standard font
- 6Clear the boot, glovebox and dashboard of any clutter because testers need clear access
- 7Make sure the bonnet opens and the fuel cap seals properly
- 8Sort any warning lights on the dashboard before you arrive. An illuminated airbag or ABS light is an automatic fail
MOT classes & maximum fees.
Official MOT rules split vehicles into classes based on size and type. Most cars and small vans fall under Class 4, but it's worth knowing what yours is, especially if you drive a larger van or a motorhome.
| Class | Vehicle type | Max fee |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | Motorcycles up to 200cc | £29.65 |
| Class 2 | Motorcycles over 200cc | £29.65 |
| Class 3 | Three-wheeled vehicles up to 450kg | £37.80 |
| Class 4 | Cars (up to 8 seats), motorcaravans, light vans up to 3,000kg | £54.85 |
| Class 5 | Private passenger vehicles, 13+ seats | From £59.55 |
| Class 7 | Goods vehicles 3,000–3,500kg | £58.60 |
Maximum fees are set by official MOT regulations. Garages may charge less; many independents bundle MOT and service together at a discount.
The cheapest way to keep both up to date.
Booking your MOT and annual service together is almost always cheaper than doing them separately. The car is already on the ramp, the labour overlap is significant, and most garages list a combined price that beats the sum of the parts.
It also means any advisories from the MOT can be checked during the service, and any worn item flagged in the service can be addressed before it becomes an MOT failure next year.
Tick both MOT and a Full Service, and BookMyGarage will show bundled quotes from garages near you.
Shared labour
One ramp slot, one set of inspections, so garages pass the saving on.
Aligned dates
Service and MOT renew together, making it easier to budget and plan.
Catch fails early
Advisories become service items, not surprise failures.
Combined discount
Most garages offer a discount when you bundle.
MOT FAQs
- When does my car need its first MOT?
- Three years from the date it was first registered, then every year after that. The exact due date is printed on your V5C logbook and you can also check it free on the GOV.UK MOT history service using just your registration.
- How much does an MOT cost in the UK?
- The maximum fee is capped by DVSA regulations at £54.85 for a Class 4 car or light van MOT and £29.65 for a standard motorcycle. Most garages charge less than the cap; the exact price depends on your area and the garage you choose.
- Can I drive my car to the test if my MOT has expired?
- Only if you have a pre-booked MOT appointment and the car is otherwise roadworthy. Driving without a valid MOT in any other circumstance is a £1,000 fine, plus your insurance is likely invalid.
- What's the difference between an advisory and a fail?
- Advisories (minor defects) are items that are wearing but still legal. Keep an eye on them and budget for replacement. Major or dangerous failures mean the car isn't road-legal until the work is done and the car has been retested.
- Do I get a free retest if I fail?
- Most garages offer a free or discounted partial retest if you leave the car with them for the repair work and return within 10 working days. If you take it elsewhere or come back later, you'll usually pay for a full retest.
- Does an MOT include a service?
- No. The MOT is purely a safety, roadworthiness and emissions check. It doesn't change oil, filters or fluids and the tester won't strip anything down. Booking a service alongside the MOT is the cheapest way to keep both up to date.
- Can I get an MOT done up to a month early?
- Yes. You can test up to one calendar month minus a day before the expiry date and keep your original renewal date, so you don't lose any time. Test earlier than that and the new certificate runs from the test date instead.
- What documents do I need to bring to my MOT?
- Technically none. The tester only needs the vehicle and its registration. But it's worth bringing your V5C logbook and the previous MOT certificate (or knowing where to find them online) in case any details need to be cross-checked.
- How long does an MOT test take?
- A standard Class 4 MOT takes 45–60 minutes if nothing is found. Most garages offer a while-you-wait service, or you can drop the car off and collect later in the day.
- Can I appeal an MOT failure?
- Yes. If you think the test was unfair, complete an official MOT complaint form (VT17) within 14 working days, pay a fee, and the regulator will retest at one of their own centres. If they agree, your fee is refunded and the result is overturned.
